Title

Panel of Istrian Marble

Subject

Forgery, Ancient, Sculpture, Italy

Description

Panel depicts a bearded man under an arch. This panel is an example of Renaissance tradition of producing copies of known forms of carvings as well as aging their own work to give the appearance of antique as an expression of their devotion to their ancient Italian heritage. This marble relief demonstrates the attempt of an artist to recreate antique marble panels clumsily and with strange proportions. This pieces is evident of the long history mankind has with forgery; it is not a new development.
