Title

Curiosity

Subject

Painting, Charles Burton Barber

Description

The painting features three characters familiar in Barber's paintings of the 1880s, the little blond girl, a Jack Russell and kitten. The girl is caught away from parental eyes and those constraints imposed on a child from an affluent Victorian home. A frog and a wasp facing-off in the foreground of the composition caught the three models' attention, as shown through their intense gazes, the girl's outstretched arms and spread fingers, and the animals' pricked ears.
